Root Bark & Natural Dyes
Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark
Mimosa tenuiflora · Brazil (Bahia)
Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark (MHRB) is the inner root bark of the Brazilian tree Mimosa tenuiflora, traditionally valued as a natural source of reddish-purple dye and in regional craft.
What is Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark?
Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark, often abbreviated MHRB, is the bark harvested from the root of Mimosa tenuiflora — a hardy, fast-growing tree native to the dry forests of north-eastern Brazil and parts of Central America. The tree is also known regionally as jurema preta and tepezcohuite.
The inner bark is prized for its rich tannin and pigment content, which makes it one of the most reliable plant sources of a deep reddish-purple dye. It is offered for botanical, craft and cultural purposes — most commonly natural dyeing of textiles and fibres.
Origin & habitat
Mimosa tenuiflora thrives in the semi-arid caatinga of Brazil, where poor soils and long dry seasons produce dense, resinous bark. Our lots are sourced from established harvesters in Bahia who manage stands for long-term regeneration.
Because growing conditions vary year to year, colour and tannin strength differ between harvests. We inspect every lot for cleanliness, dryness and consistency before it is offered.
Tradition & cultural context
Mimosa has a long history among the indigenous peoples of north-eastern Brazil, where the jurema tree holds deep cultural and ceremonial significance. It also appears in traditional skin-care preparations across the region.
We present MHRB with respect for that lineage and strictly for educational, craft and cultural appreciation — never with medical claims.
Formats & how it is offered
We offer the bark in three formats so you can choose the right one for your craft: shredded (most popular and easy to work with), whole strips (longest shelf presence, you control the grind), and fine powder (fastest to extract pigment).
All three are the same single-origin bark — only the cut differs. Resealable weights run from 100g up to 1kg for makers working at volume.
Sourcing & quality
Every order is the inner root bark only — no filler, no blended species. Lots are kept traceable to the harvest and stored dry to protect pigment.
Please check your local regulations before purchasing; some jurisdictions restrict the sale or shipment of this botanical.
